Did you have a good 4th? It was quiet here, we avoided a family gathering with climbing Covid-19 cases and it was a bummer. But we did discover the 4th is a great day to shop for garden goodies for our new backyard. Check out the progress!
Basically half of our yard is being cleared to make room for professionally installed garden beds and new irrigation, fruit trees are being pruned and trimmed, and new ground cover around the garden beds. We have a huge side yard that we’ve never done much with and takes a lot of sun. So excited!
Miko has taken relaxing very seriously this week since I relocated his larger bed next to my work-from-home desk, hard to focus with a snoring chihuahua – but so cute!
We got a day off on Friday and headed to Midtown Sacramento, the first time since the pandemic started and it was such a nice change of scenery. Thankfully the weather was not too hot for wearing masks while exploring.
Love all the new art murals. Also spotted a Covid-19 testing area which is a new reality. And many sidewalks and streets have been closed to make room for social distancing outdoor eating and entertainment.
We stopped for lunch at Sibling by Pushkin’s where we had the perfect shady table and breeze.
It’s a great gluten free restaurant with a large vegan menu. We got the Portobello Benedict and Spicy Crispy Rolled Tacos, both awesome and unique. It was so nice to have a patio dining experience. With the new mask requirements, it seems everyone is wearing a mask except when eating at their table and it worked out well. I have a large collection of masks since I’m required to wear them when in the office, clean backups are needed in our cars, bags, etc.
Lots of salads and stir fries this week. I did try baking tofu cubes tossed to tamari, sesame oil, and cornstarch which came out good.
I also tried Trader Joe’s Vegan Ranch dip with is okay, but also good whisked with tamari and apple cider vinegar for a salad dressing.
And got back into making sauerkraut using an entire sliced head of cabbage in our fermenting crock forgetting how much that would make! Now I have 4 large jars of sauerkraut in our fridge!
For our quiet 4th at home, hubby grilled a Beyond Sausage for himself and a Trader Joe’s Vegan “Turkey” burger for me with grilled corn and watermelon. Miko got his own grilled corn which he fully enjoyed chewing the corn off for an hour or so with us closely watching and taking it away when he started chewing the actual cob.
Then we watched Hamilton on Disney+ while comforting a terrified chihuahua who hates fireworks which seemed worse this year with more setting them off at home. Poor guy was hot, restless, violently shaking, and panting. A cooling gel pad from our freezer seemed to help him relax as be cuddled up to it hiding under a blanket on my lap – need to remember that next year.
And on my run this morning, I got very close to a group of geese that could care less about me or anyone walking by.
It was a nice long weekend as we try to make the most of this situation and I hope you had a wonderful 4th and wonderful week ahead!

Oh my goodness, that picture of Miko with the corn is too cute!!
I watched my daughter’s dogs over the 4th of July, so I had two terrified dogs, one kind of scared dog, and one that didn’t care. I agree that it seemed worse this year. People are bored and over it, so they ignored the fact that they’re illegal in our area.

Haha, yes – I think it needs to be a regular treat for him!
Very true! Lots more bigger fireworks this year!

While I didn’t do anything for the 4th of July, I can’t say it was quiet… It sounded like a battlefield with all those fireworks! I’ve never experienced anything quite like it before. Luka was NOT happy, to say the least.
Love the murals. I’m definitely enjoying the profusion of new art in light of these turbulent times, at least.

Here too and poor Luka! Me too on the art, so much more creative expression around here.
