Hope you’re having a great weekend, I am enjoying it after a tough week. Hubby was on business travel all week and we got rain, lots of rain with freezing temps and crazy winds that wreaked havoc on our fence again. It’s being held up with a bungee cord currently and we need to work with the neighbor to replace another rotted post.
And I’m thankful for it, we still need lots of rain in this area to catch to the normal levels. But two chihuahuas were very unhappy and refused to get outside. They preferred blanket snuggling over freezing winds and hail.
Can’t blame them, but lucky me the weather was terrible a lot when I needed to get them outside before work, before bed, etc. and I’ve been going through a lot of paper towels this week – ugh.
That’s been a challenge with Leela for awhile now that she’s older, even though I frequently get up 1-2 times during the night to let her out to go potty, that’s not enough and she tends to wander the house during the night and get disoriented leaving messes behind. So we’re trying this Parkland Portable Pet Playpen for her to sleep in at night.
I had mixed feelings about doing this, but decided it’s good for her too being large enough for a bed with a blanket, potty pad, and food and water bowls so it has everything she needs in a safe space. It folds up small, and has a removable zip roof and zip door like a little tent. Probably wouldn’t be strong enough for big dogs, but perfect for little 8 lb. Leela.
It has been a stressful week at work being short staffed and running back and forth to take care of the dogs in crazy weather, but could have been worse. There might have been a little stress eating. I grabbed Hail Merry Meyer Lemon cups from the Byte fridge at work for an afternoon snack one day and they were delicious! A little messy since they’re mostly raw ingredients, but just wow on the powerful and bright lemon flavor – it hit the spot for a summery themed treat. And I seriously scored on more Soul Sprout products at Grocery Outlet finding more bars and truffles for hubby’s next business trip and a couple of flavors of Organic Peanut Butter Bytes. Oh my, they are amazing! So much so I’m considering going back to clean out the shelves!
There have been lots of salads too and yesterday I decided to deviate from our usual breakfast smoothies for oatmeal with sauteed cinnamon apples and raisins mixed in for a fun option before the gym.
Lots of veggie stir fries with instant organic red rice, tofu, and whatever fresh veggies I had on hand to keep things simple and fast.
And last night we stepped out to Mikuni for sushi and beer. It’s a very popular local chain of sushi restaurants with fun vegan rolls that go beyond the basic avocado and cucumber rolls. They offered a cute roll called Saving Nemo as a special about a year or so ago and it was so popular among the vegan community that it’s stayed on the menu. It’s a unique tofu roll with teriyaki and salsa topped with greens. The Rabbit roll and Veg-ten rolls are also awesome.
We had a great laugh because there was a group of two couples sitting at the table next to us drinking and chatting and suddenly one women breaks out loudly saying, “Vegans are so weird for not eating meat!” Then going on to question, “What can they eat?” I just laughed looking at the table full of sushi and edamame. They clearly did not realize we were vegan and I decided not to engage since the alcohol had been flowing for awhile and she didn’t notice us humorously mocking her, “Gee, we’re so weird! What can we eat?” :-)
Okay, to the list.
7 perspectives to embrace minimalism.
Kevin Smith might finally embrace veganism like his daughter. He needs cardiologist Joel Kahn’s new book.
David Carter discusses his vegan lifestyle.
Hampton Creek Foods, or JUST now, is looking to tackle world hunger.
There are plenty of vegan cheese, milk, and creamers out there.
We need road trip to Oakland to try this place out.
To me, this is a positive sign of the times when meat producers start investing in vegan.
I’m already hooked on JaVale McGee’s YouTube show.
If you’re not familiar with Dr. Greger, this TEDx talk is a great watch.
That play pen is adorable!! You spoil your furry babies, thats for sure! ;-) – http://www.domesticgeekgirl.com
Haha, thanks. So far so good with it!
Sorry about the fence, some projects are a pain! And I feel your pain about the dog/pee problem. I guess I’m “lucky” because I still get up a few times to nurse the baby and I let the dog baby out to pee. Small dogs really do have small bladders and taking them out frequently is so important, he’s 112 in dog years! And he will pee all over the carpet. I’ll have to look into that potty pad! But I’m not sure he’d like to be in there. Maybe! For now, I keep him in all his beds in the kitchen and use baby fences to block rooms, not attractive but I do what I have too! Have a great Monday Christine!!!
Thanks on the fence, yes they can be! Leela is getting there in age too and not sure if she just can’t hold it anymore and/or getting senile. Yes, potty pads or event the small fake grass patches that sit on a tray are great indoor solutions. You too, happy Monday!
I’m 100% envious of this post. I’ve been striking out recently at Grocery Outlet with nothing particularly exciting to report, AND that sushi looks fantastic. I would eat that tofu roll everyday if I could!
Aw, that can be frustrating and I’ve been there. Our local one has a really good health food isle that I usually end up spending too much at.
That is quite the playpen! I’m curious to see what Leela thinks of it!
All of the eats look terrific!
It’s going so far, she was not happy with it last night and started barking when she wanted out way too early this morning. Ugh!
The play pen is such a smart idea. It’s so hard to watch our fur babies age, I totally feel your pain. I also get the pouring rain/small dog dilemma. For the most part, my two are pretty good about going out in bad weather, but when they sneak away to do their business in the house, it’s always next to the front door on the stone floor, which is an easy clean up.
I’ll never understand people who mock vegans. Because it’s normal to eat a dead animal over plants? I’m happy you and your husband had a good laugh over her ridiculous comments. :)
It is, I want her to be happy, but also safe. Same for Miko – near the front door a lot.
Exactly on vegan mockers – bragging about eating meat is way stranger.
I was wondering how little Leela was doing. I think it’s such a great idea to get that playpen for her. It looks like a very safe and cozy option.
I’ve always wanted to try the Hail Merry Meyer Lemon cups. Glad to know you liked them, I’ll pick them up next time I see them.
She is still adjusting to the playpen and barks during the night when she’s frustrated she can wander around, we’re still working on that.
The cups are great, but I highly recommend the Soul Sprout treats too – wow!
