Weekend List

March 1, 2015 by christine

It’s been a good weekend here so far even though we didn’t get as much rain as we were supposed to and my car is still a dirty mess! Miko has been loving all the attention with us home and doing stuff around the house.

I had a girls night out Friday with my mom and sister at a Japanese restaurant where I got this huge bowl of veggie udon soup for $10, not bad!

And I worked on another one pot meal quinoa recipe with kale because why not put kale in everything?

In July of last year, I reconfigured our main computer desk to be a standing desk.

And have been happy with it for the most part until I started having iliac crest hip pain that got worse after running the Urban Cow half marathon in October and even more tweaked after a not so great treadmill run where I made quick move to save my phone from falling, oops! I’ve been taking a break from running for the last month hoping to settle it down and let it heal, but noticed it seemed to flare up after standing at the desk for awhile.

After a lot of research, I determined that the standing desk may not be a great thing for me now since I’m very active already and alternating my standing positions frequently so I wasn’t locked kneed didn’t seem to help. Most articles recommended a treadmill desk for my activity type because my legs are moving and I notice my hip feels fine walking, but I’m not ready to spend that money and modify our office. So I reconfigured my desk this weekend back to a sitting desk and will try it for a month to see if it helps with the iliac crest issue.

Thankfully iliac crest issues are not a big problem, it’s not a joint problem and should heal fine on it’s own. I’m just trying to find the right combo of resting while still being active to let it do so!

Anyway, on to the list! This Raw Vegan Double Chocolate Cake recipe looks like an insanely good gateway dessert to introduce people to raw, plant-based foods! Mmmmm, I adore Brazil nuts!

This entire list of vegan recipes looks great, especially the raw buckwheat breakfast porridge and tahini dressing.

I’ll admit finding good vegan cosmetics is still a challenge for me, but this is a great list of them!

This is kind of a sad article about food waste being a massive problem, but a positive reminder to be thankful for and resourceful with what you have. I’ve been trying to perfect my skills in this area buying only fresh foods that I know I will be using up that week and saving veggie scraps for smoothies to not only not waste food, but save money too!

This is more fuel to avoid processed foods when possible, basically a study that two FDA approved chemical emulsifiers could be screwing up microbes in our guts and contributing to weight gain. Yuck!

You’re probably tired of hearing non-vegans tell you how “bad” tofu is, right? Here’s a story that says otherwise.

Worried you’re not getting enough sleep? This study suggests that people sleeping 8+ hours a night could be at high risk for a stroke.

And it may be easy to get her name confused with a Starbucks order, but I like Ariana Grande a lot more now!

The weather has been crazy, warm and sunny here! More like May, not March!

I’ve always wondered about how good a stand up desk would be for my back, maybe not so good. I think as long as people work out the way we do, sitting at work shouldn’t be a big issue.

I love Ariana Grande, she went to school with my son’s girlfriend (she’s really young!). Her voice is incredible, and she’s a vegan, what’s not to like?

I was really looking forward to embracing the standing desk and did for awhile, maybe I’ll try it again later when my hip settles down.
