Did I mention the chihuahuas love simply steamed spaghetti squash? Especially mixed with V-Dog Kibble.
Every time I steam one from our garden, I have to share and they really go gaga for it!
Thankfully it’s good for dogs too, low calorie, nutrient-dense, wet fiber is good for everyone. And spaghetti squashes are an easy weeknight choice if you steam them in the microwave. Hey, I’m a fan of slow baking them in the oven for an hour too, but that’s just not realistic after a busy work day and trip to the gym after. To microwave steam them – cut the squash in half, scoop the seeds out, and place the cut side down in a shallow dish of water. Microwave on high for 10 minutes and they should be perfectly steamed. Simple, right? And delicious with this creamy zucchini basil sauce.
Creamy Zucchini Basil Sauce
- 1 zucchini, chopped
- 1/2 cup shelled hemp seeds
- 1 clove of garlic
- 2 tbsp. of lemon juice
- 3 tbsp. nutritional yeast
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh basil
- 1/2 cup water, as needed
- salt and pepper to taste
Place all ingredients into a high speed blender and blend to a smooth and creamy texture. Serve and enjoy! Makes 4 servings.
The sauce has a vibrant green color with a nice basil and garlic flavor that’s not as strong as pesto, it has more of a creamy, cheesy flavor and texture that’s fun with spaghetti squash.
The creamy texture coats the squash nicely, but would also work well as a salad dressing or for spiral sliced veggies.
It makes a hearty and filling dish that’s oil free and comforting.
Grab a spaghetti squash and try this sauce!

This looks great and the Chi’s are so cute and funny! With Paco…every time I chop veggies he freaks out and wants some! Because of his hip and knee issues I worry he’s going to fall so I have been giving him some right away so I can hurry up and chop the rest for myself!

So cute on Paco, Skipper was the same way about treats and walk time.

I love every single ingredient in here and cannot wait to give this a whirl, over spaghetti sauce just like yours. I have 2 spaghetti squash that just popped back from seed, I didn’t actually plant. Big bonus. But your dogs like it? Wow!!! That’s awesome. I don’t think mine (they are so ridiculous!) would touch. But then, they rarely get off the couch.

I adore spaghetti squash and try to plant it every year. One year we had an odd mutant version pop back up with steel mesh for skin I swear!

That’s squash, not sauce, opps! Pardon my typo’s up at 5 today, bleh.

No worries, right there with you and amazed at how many typos I had to fix on this post – one of those weeks!
