Simple Smoothie Night

June 27, 2011 by christine

So glad this Monday is over! The day just didn’t slow down at work, lots of fires to put out. When I got home, I was feeling fried and not ready to put a lot of effort into dinner. Especially since it’s just me, myself, and I tonight. And I wasn’t craving anything too hearty after being stuck at my desk most of the day. So I made today a multi-smoothie day throwing together another green monster for dinner that included all this.

Hemp protein powder, sprouted lentils, Vitamineral Green, a carrot, kale, a little cacao powder, and some stevia drops. I know this looks like a pretty gross combo, especially loaded with the grittier hemp protein instead of smoother rice and pea protein powders.

But I don’t mind the texture or flavor, it’s actually very pleasant blended with the right fruits and flavors.

Sure, it looks green and gritty, but it’s a super protein powder for me packing a healthy dose of fiber and one of the most complete plant-based proteins.

And I add another green powder to my smoothies, Vitamineral Green. I’ve become a fan of the green super powder ever since hearing Cherie Soria of Living Light recommend it so highly at the Raw Health Expo last year. It’s not cheap, but the $45 jar lasts a few months for us. Here’s a long-ish video of her mentioning it if you’re interested. Anyway, Vitamineral Green has an impressive list of super ingredients, but does not have a bitter flavor and it’s less gritty than hemp protein powder.

The real flavor and texture star ingredient of this smoothie that disguises the textures of the green super powders are the frozen banana chunks. It sounds crazy that just a handful of frozen banana chunks can alter the texture and flavor of all the veggies, but it does. Of course adding some stevia drops and a couple of tablespoons of cacao powder helps too. :-)

My simple and lonely dinner is served.

Leaving me plenty of time for a little house re-organization and a long session in the gym while catching up on House Hunters International, Dr. Oz, and 30 Rock.

What are your favorite smoothie ingredients?

My favorites change with the seasons. Right now I’m loving strawberries in my smoothies. They are so fresh and yummy, direct from the farmer’s market!

    Hope today is better!

What are your favorite smoothie ingredients? = whatever is about to rot in the veggie drawer or get freezer burnt in the freezer :)

I am a wing it girl but frozen banana chunks are always a key staple as is either sugar or agave. Sorry, cannot to “natural” tasting smoothies..I want them to taste like a treat! And so does Skylar :)

you know i do not mind the hemp protein either. it is very earthy and i like that.
i also agree that adding fruits seems to tame it down as well. hope today is not as busy for you christine. i feel for you!

I finally ordered the Vitamineral Greens and hemp seeds from your store this morning. I have been out of green powder for a while and this cold has prompted me to get back on it. Now I heed hemp seed recipes since I will be getting the mammoth bag you recommended!

Awesome, you’ll find plenty of hemp seed recipes here. :-) But I gotta recommend starting with this one:

Oh boy, I would have to say nut butter or cocoa powder would take the cake! I’m just sort of a dessert gal after all!

That smoothie looks great! I always add in a tbsp of peanut butter to my smoothies. It’s not the same without a little pb! Love the bubbles in your smoothie.
