Getting Ready for the Race

March 12, 2011 by christine

I could get used to the idea of fueling up for half marathons and I did a lot of fueling today prepping for tomorrow. I started with my usual Sun Warrior protein smoothie with spinach, pear, carrot and a kiwi for breakfast.

Then I snacked on Bragg’s almonds with lunch, they were on sale in the Whole Foods bulk foods department and are addicting with a slightly savory, salty flavor.

And I threw together a big salad for lunch dressed with more Bragg’s, lemon juice and nutritional yeast – simple and tasty.

Not pictured is the big bowl of air popped popcorn I snacked on too, more carb loading. :-)

After lunch, hubby and I stepped out to see Rango in theaters and it was a fun and cute movie, much better than I thought it would be. When I first saw a trailer for it, I didn’t have high hopes with the odd animation and characters. But it was a fun and pleasant surprise! And nice sitting and relaxing in a theater resting for the race. :-)

Then we picked up my race packet and shirt and I laid out everything for tomorrow as soon as I got home including my favorite Nike sports bra and running capris.

During my last long run, I discovered the elastic on my older Nike bra was dying and rubbed raw spots under the girls – not fun!

I also attached the timing strip to my shoes and the bib to my shirt since I’ll probably be too cranky and barely functional at such an unholy early hour tomorrow morning!

For dinner I worked on a little more carb loading breaking out the neglected bag of rice in my pantry.

After cooking it stove top for 30 minutes, I added a marina soup base I created in the Vita-Mix, frozen corn, artichoke hearts, chopped zucchini and nutritional yeast and simmered for about 15 minutes.

I ended up with a tasty marina rice stew that was very filling especially with the few pieces of sourdough bread I dipped in the sauce – yum!

Dinner was a definite carb splurge for me and I’m feeling very full now.

I think I’m ready for tomorrow, but not looking forward to getting up at 5AM, 4AM actually thanks to springing forward an hour. That is just cruel to schedule a race that day after losing an hour of sleep! I didn’t even think of that before registering months ago. :-P

What are some of your pre-race preparations?

Good pre-race eats! Nothing worse than chafe under the girls so smart for you to get a new sports bra for the race! Do you use Body Glide? It really helps.
