Sunday afternoon, Miko was not a happy camper. He burrowed into his blanket and was not feeling very social.
By Sunday night, he was very antsy and restless and could not sit still while we were watching TV.
He kept climbing all over us, went to back and forth to the other couch and just could not sit still. I thought it might be because there was a fly in the house which he hates, but he still couldn’t get comfortable after hubby got rid of the fly and we did not sleep well Sunday night!
He was still pretty antsy Monday and even yelped in pain trying to get comfy in my lap which really worried me since I couldn’t find a sore leg or sore spot and thought maybe it was a blockage or something worse. So to the vet we went this morning and he was not happy about being there either!
Turns out it’s a little back injury causing him discomfort which I have no clue how it happened, maybe playing too hard going after his toy over the weekend? He’s feeling much better after a shot of cortisone and taking his first pain pill with dinner thankfully. But whew, he had me worried! Yesterday was an emotional roller coaster which running on a lack of sleep did not help.
I have not been worried about cooking this week. On Sunday I cooked 3 cups of brown rice to stash in the fridge and eat from for the week just to have a simple, whole food on hand to use. It was delicious in this marinara saute with chopped tempeh and veggies. Especially with Trader Joe’s Vegan Mozzarella Shreds added to make it gooey.
And there was this huge kale salad with simple beans and rice for lunch.
Tonight I sauteed more brown rice with more chopped tempeh and veggies in a simple mixture of tamari and sriracha for a kicky, veggie loaded fried rice style one pot meal.
All delicious and I still have plenty of cooked brown rice left. Hmmm, maybe I’ll try it in smoothies next. Hey, I’ve heard beans are good in smoothies, why not?

So glad Miko’s back is better! I hate vet visits, they are stressful and expensive. The dogs hate them more than me I strongly suspect. It’s amazing how easy it is for dogs to injure their backs though when playing. Have to be super careful with Dachshunds because they injure their backs easily. And I have not yet heard beans are good in smoothies but it’s worth a shot!!!

Thanks, me too! Agreed on vet visits and my dogs really hate them. We have a great vet, but still tough for them. Miko loves to play fetch with his toy and will flying leaps from the floor to the couch running around the house with it and maybe that’s not a good idea anymore.
I read an article that beans could be a good alternative to protein powders in smoothies and was intrigued, could work if black beans can make good brownies.

Feel better Miko! Sophie hurt her back jumping around a few times (she thinks she’s a cat and must have lived with some cats before we rescued her).
I’ll have to try the bean in the smoothie idea. I’ve used silken tofu so why not regular beans?

I think Miko thinks he’s a cat too the way he climbs all over the sofa! Me too on the smoothies, could be a good protein powder alternative.

I’ve been making slow cooker oats and then putting them in the fridge for cold oats when I want them. So customizable!

Nice, I gotta try that too! I like to slow cook a huge amount of beans to use for during the week too.

Poor puppy. At least you caught it fairly quickly.
Did you try putting brown rice in a smoothie yet? I have a feeling it might be bad…. mostly because there is a certain texture that you get from making rice milk before you strain it. Like it gels up. I would start small then add more. I can’t wait to hear what happens.

No yet on the rice, think I’ll try it before my long run Sunday and report back. Should be interesting!

Glad the pups is feeling better! It’s always so scary because they can’t tell you what’s wrong or what hurts.
I think batch cooking absolutely saves the day (when I actually think to do it!). Such a smart and simple thing.

So true, I got so worried when he yelped in pain trying to get comfy in my lap.
Agreed and I just need to batch cook more too!

I’m just catching up on your blog and I’m so happy to hear that Miko is on the mend. Poor little guy. It’s so scary when our pups aren’t well, if only they could talk to us.
