Sweet & Spicy Onion Dressing

February 28, 2013 by christine

So glad it’s Friday Eve, it’s been a long week being on call for work and tackling lots of projects. We started celebrating early here with a backyard play session when I got home from work.

The weather was perfect for a little game of fetch.

Leela took the opportunity to kiss up for an early dinner.

And I decided to flare things up with another raw dressing, I’m on a dressing roll this week. But this one packs a spicy and powerful kick with the sweetness from raw onions and apple cider vinegar. I don’t consume enough raw onions because the flavor can be too strong and they don’t always agree with me. But that strong flavor also packs strong health benefits as studies look at the possible disease-preventing powers of onions. This dressing blends the strong flavor with sweet banana and creamy hemp seeds while adding a tangy zing from the vinegar.

Sweet & Spicy Onion Dressing

  • 1 banana, peeled and chopped
  • 1/4 cup shelled hemp seeds (aka hemp hearts)
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup chopped onion
  • 1/4 tsp. dried mustard
  • 1/2 tsp. celery seed
  • 1/4 cup water

Place all ingredients into a high speed blender and blend to a smooth and creamy texture. Makes about 4 servings.

It almost looks like soft serve ice cream with a very thick and creamy texture.

And coats a messy salad with kale, apple, and edamame nicely.

The dressing packs a strong tangy flavor with some spice adding a lot of kick to the salad which might be too strong for some, you can use less raw onion and vinegar for a milder flavor.

But the strong sweet and spicy flavor was just what I needed to kick start the weekend early.

    Leela looks super cute!

Dressing sounds amazing, I should try that someday when I return from Bogota.
