Friday night I got a nasty surprise, I started feeling awful – tired and achy with a pounding headache. By Saturday morning, I was parked on the couch nursing a full on migraine, feeling nauseous and feverish, and cursing my luck for getting sick on a weekend. I should have seen this coming since there were a few out sick at work and maintaining my germaphobe habits is tough when we’re so busy. Since the weather was chilly and rainy most of the weekend, I tried to embrace the downtime allowing hubby to tackle chores for me and enjoy time in front of the TV and fireplace while sipping tea.
And keeping the few meals I did prepare very simple and basic. With my stomach not being a happy camper, I went with a simple roasted tempeh and broccoli dinner for probiotics and protein.
I just tossed the chopped tempeh with coconut oil, curry powder, garlic powder and salt before oven roasting for 30 minutes at 350 degrees.
The end result was a little crunchy, but nice dipped in vegan worcestershire sauce.
But there were also ridiculously lazy lunches, like heating a can of Amy’s Organic Lentil soup and serving topped with a little nutritional yeast.
Today I started feeling more human and ready to put more effort into lunch. I was craving a huge salad after my lazy meals and threw one together with cultured veggies and avocado ginger dressing to hopefully appease my still iffy insides.
And a simple side of sauteed zucchini rounds in a little olive oil and Old Bay Seasoning, an odd combo that both hubby and I enjoyed.
Thankfully by this afternoon, I was feeling up to getting out of the house and running some much-needed PetSmart and Target errands. Miko is a tiny little chihuahua with no fur on his underside, poor little guy can’t stand night walks in our cold weather lately hunching in his little body to try and keep warm. I’m not one for dressing dogs, I have a hard enough time dressing myself sometimes. But out of necessity, I picked up a sweater and jacket for him to have as we head into the really nasty winter weather. He was a little unsure when I put the sweater on him.
Looking at me wondering what I’ve done to him.
And he was perfectly happy to make a toy of the sweater as soon as I took it off him.
Maybe because he destroyed his favorite green guy toy this weekend, I had to take it away when he started eating the fuzz and stuffing from it.
Sigh, this is gonna get expensive if he keeps going through one of these every few weeks!
I’m feeling much better now, on Sunday night with the weekend over. Lucky me. Thankfully it’s gonna be a short week followed by a long weekend. At the Raw Health Expo this year, Cherie Soria said that we can’t always take perfect care of our health and sometimes we have to make bad decisions and deal with the consequences to remind ourselves why we shouldn’t. I haven’t felt as awful as I did yesterday in a long time, I can’t remember the last time. I haven’t dealt with a migraine like that in years when I used to deal with them regularly in high school and college. I’m pretty sure I can blame working too hard, stressing too much, and not getting enough sleep over the last few weeks probably running my immune system into the ground. Swift reality kick received! It’s going to be a challenge not to stress the next few months with busy times at work and holiday madness, I’ll be making a huge effort to go higher raw incorporating more veggies, getting more sleep, and trying not to bring work home with me.

migraine, feeling nauseous and feverish = Ugh!! So sorry you felt so hideous. I think you are so wise to take stock of life, try to reduce your stress and eat as well as you can but you’re right, sometimes we just get sick and have to deal with it…but wow, you sound like you were hit hard. So sorry!

Thanks, it was as annoying as awful, like a mini-flu or something, not fun. Lucky me feeling fine to go back to work today. :-P

So true and I think the holiday stress is partially to blame sometimes! Thankfully feeling much better today.

I hope you’re feeling better! I remember when I felt really sick and was not going to go to a yoga teacher training class. My teacher reminded me that it is very important to keep ourselves healthy during these times and we must be especially attentive to our needs. It was a great reminder that so much of our health is in our hands and paying attention to the sleep we give our bodies, the food we put in, the physical, emotional, and mental stress that we choose to carry should be watched and controlled. This is basically what you’re saying here, it just reminded me of this little story! You’ve got the idea :)

Thanks, feeling much better today – just in time to go back to work. :-P Great point on yoga and so true that little health hiccups can be great motivation to maintain a healthy lifestyle and remind us how grateful we should be for our health.
