I hope everyone is having a great weekend so far. Wait it’s Sunday already?! Where did my 3 day weekend go? And next weekend is Easter! I love seeing family for Easter, but I always feel a little gypped on Easter weekend – the weekend is consumed with holiday family gathering plans without an extra day off – that’s not really a relaxing weekend. This year we’re having a big gathering at my Dad’s house and I’m still planning what I’m going to bring to counter the ham he’s doing – at least one dessert and a couple of side dishes that will equal a meal for me. Another interesting article quoting Amanda’s raw diet:
“Raw food is a great diet,” Lawrence said. “If you are looking to lose weight, it is good to eat foods that are high in water content like vegetables. The raw food diet purports eating foods that are high in water, low in calories and high in nutrition. The reason we are fat is because we are eating processed foods, so a diet that says only eat unprocessed, natural foods is great.”
Again, not thrilled that the primary reason for a raw diet in this article is weight management, but it highlights many good points about the diet.
I spent most of yesterday feeling sluggish while my lower intestines felt like they were tied in a knot, food poisoning I’m pretty sure and I’ve been racking my brain on where I may have picked it up. On Friday we went out to lunch at a local sub shop while heading to Grass Valley and I got this farmer’s market salad:
I had them hold the feta cheese and it was not too filling, they didn’t have much for a high-raw vegan! Anyway, possibly from this salad? Who knows and something I hate about going out to eat too much because I’ve had my share of these incidents, I like to think the food I prepare at home is much safer.
For dinner Friday, I had homemade salad and broccoli mash that is filling comfort food to me.
After, we relaxed and watched New Moon and ugh, it was not a great movie. The low rating on Rotten Tomatoes does not lie! I really enjoyed the book, but too much was changed and lost in translation in the movie and the acting and dialogue was just painful to watch. Though I had many good laughs watching this after. If the third movie is going to be this bad, think I’ll just stick to the books!
Yesterday we saw Hot Tub Time Machine in theaters and that was much, much better. Super funny and corny. Normally I would have dismissed a movie like this as a renter after seeing the previews, but we got curious after seeing good reviews and it’s worth seeing in theaters. After, we went to a popular sushi place for dinner where I ordered the vegan roll combo plate. While it was very good, the rolls were basic and small compared to the monstrous seafood rolls hubby got, one was just cucumber wrapped in rice and nori – that’s it. While his were huge and topped with many toppings and sauces making a color explosion. Not sure why vegan rolls couldn’t be that beautiful and elaborate. On the plus side, mine was much easier and more dignified to stuff in my mouth. :-)
Today I had a fun day with my sisters starting at Whole Foods for a Raw Foods for Kids recipe class. I got recipes for banana mash ice cream, almond butter banana mash, smoothies and a coconut strawberry dipping sauce. Yeah, I don’t have kids, but my sisters do and it was a great thing for them to see and learn quick, healthy treats for them. After we headed to the salad bar for lunch where I noticed something new.
Parma Vegan Parmesan topping, I did what any curious healthnut foodie would do – coated my salad with it. And it was okay … just okay. It did not seem at all like a Parmesan topping to me, the flavor was mild and it seemed very dry – kind of the cheap Kraft shaker of vegan Parmesan toppings. I like Brazil nut parm better for a substitute, it’s moister with a lot more flavor while being simple and quick to throw a batch together and keep in the fridge for the week’s use.
I’ve also been experimenting in the kitchen trying to perfect an almond-pulp based macaroon recipe using NuNaturals Stevia.
It’s close, but not quite ready for posting yet. I will test it on hubby tonight and use more family members as lab rats tomorrow.
